About The School of Breath Science
RAISING THE STANDARD OF BREATH EDUCATION
The School of Breath Science provides professional education in breathing, physiology, nervous system regulation and resilience.
We help coaches, therapists, health professionals and breath practitioners move beyond isolated techniques and methods to develop the scientific understanding, practical systems and critical reasoning required to assess, individualise and apply breath-based interventions with greater professional judgement and responsibility.
Why the School exists
BREATHING IS SIMPLE. WORKING WITH PEOPLE IS NOT.
Breathing practices can influence physiology, attention, arousal and subjective state quickly. But knowing a technique is different from knowing when, why and for whom it may be appropriate.
The School was created to bridge that gap.
Our education brings together respiratory physiology, psychophysiology, nervous system regulation, sleep, exercise, behaviour and applied coaching so practitioners can make better decisions rather than rely on rigid methods or one-size-fits-all protocols.
HOW WE APPROACH PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION
Learn MoreUnderstand before you intervene
Learn the physiology and psychology that sit underneath the practices you use.Assess before you prescribe
Start with the individual, their context, capacity and goals rather than a predetermined protocol.Individualise and progress
Learn how to select, adapt, dose, progress and regress interventions according to individual response.Work responsibly
Develop professional judgement, recognise limitations and remain aware of safety, scope and referral.
BREATH SCIENCE IS MORE THAN BREATHWORK
Meet the Founder
FOUNDED BY MARTIN MCPHILIMEY
Martin McPhilimey is a respiratory and sleep scientist, exercise physiologist, educator and practitioner with more than 15 years of experience across clinical physiology, research, coaching and human performance.
His work sits at the intersection of respiratory science, psychophysiology, exercise physiology, sleep and applied behaviour change, with a focus on translating complex science into practical frameworks that professionals can use responsibly with real people.
Martin founded the School of Breath Science to create a higher standard of professional breath education: one that values scientific literacy, critical thinking, individualisation and professional judgement as much as the practices themselves.
His experience spans clinical respiratory and sleep physiology, exercise science, research, professional education and the practical application of breathing and nervous-system interventions across health, wellbeing and performance.

OUR EDUCATIONAL STANDARDS
Professional education should do more than provide information or techniques. Our programmes are designed to develop understanding, application and responsible decision-making, while being clear about the limits of the evidence and the practitioner’s professional scope.
-
EVIDENCE-INFORMED
We teach from current science where evidence exists, while clearly distinguishing established knowledge from emerging theory, interpretation and speculation. -
APPLIED
Scientific knowledge should improve practice. Education is connected to assessment, communication, intervention selection, progression and real-world decision-making. -
RESPONSIBLE
Practitioners are taught to recognise limitations, work within professional scope and understand when modification, restraint or referral may be appropriate. -
EVOLVING
Breath science continues to develop. Our curricula are reviewed and updated as respiratory, sleep, psychophysiological and behavioural science advances.
Professional training pathways
A School, Not Just A Course
The School of Breath Science is designed to support continued professional development beyond individual certifications.
Through practitioner development, case discussions, journal clubs, educational resources and an evolving professional community, members can continue learning, questioning and refining how they work.
Our aim is to create an environment where practitioners remain curious, critical and connected as the science and practice of breathing continues to evolve.
