BREATH SCIENCE PRACTITIONER CERTIFICATION

The Breath Science Practitioner Certification (BSC) is a comprehensive professional training for coaches, therapists, health professionals and breath practitioners who want to move beyond isolated techniques and commercial methods, and develop the scientific understanding, assessment skills and practitioner reasoning required to work with greater depth, individualisation and professional judgement.

BSC integrates functional breathing, psychophysiology, nervous system regulation, somatics, sleep, exercise, behaviour, therapeutic breathwork and practitioner assessment into a broader educational framework, with an emphasis on understanding why people respond differently, adapting interventions to the individual, and making more informed decisions across complex real-world practice.

WELCOME, FOUNDATIONS & EDUCATIONAL INFRASTRUCTURE

  • Establish the foundations for the certification, including how the programme is structured, how to approach the learning process and the core principles that support practitioner development throughout BSC.

FUNCTIONAL BREATHING: MECHANICS

  • Learn to recognise, assess and distinguish functional and dysfunctional breathing patterns, exploring breathing mechanics, respiratory movement and the physical factors that influence efficient, adaptable breathing.

FUNCTIONAL BREATHING: CHEMISTRY

  • Develop a deeper understanding of ventilation, carbon dioxide, oxygen and respiratory chemistry, including how to assess patterns of overbreathing and apply appropriate strategies to support more functional respiratory behaviour.

NERVOUS SYSTEM & PSYCHOPHYSIOLOGY

  • Examine how breathing interacts with autonomic regulation, arousal, stress, perception and physiological state, integrating concepts from predictive processing and the Polyvagal framework to support more nuanced practitioner reasoning.

RELAXATION, SOMATICS & AFFECTIVE NEUROSCIENCE

  • Explore relaxation, embodied awareness, emotion and affect through the interaction between physiology, sensation, attention and nervous-system processes.

EXERCISE PHYSIOLOGY & BREATHING

  • Understand breathing during physical activity, including ventilatory demand, respiratory limitation, exercise response, recovery and the application of breathing within health and performance settings.

COLD, HEAT & RECOVERY SCIENCE

  • Examine cold and heat exposure, physiological stress, adaptation and recovery, with an emphasis on appropriate dosage, individual readiness and responsible application.

SLEEP SCIENCES

  • Learn how to assess and support sleep for health, wellbeing and performance, integrating sleep physiology, sleep regulation, recovery, behavioural influences and practical strategies that support more optimal sleep.

SLEEP-DISORDERED BREATHING

  • Explore snoring, obstructive sleep apnoea and other forms of sleep-disordered breathing, including underlying physiology, common presentations, screening considerations and when referral for appropriate investigation may be required.

BURNOUT REHABILITATION

  • Explore burnout from a biopsychosocial perspective, integrating sleep, allostatic load, breathing, recovery, effort, behaviour, somatic processes and self-esteem to develop a more individualised approach to rehabilitation and progressive return to capacity.

TRAUMA, PSYCHOLOGY & THERAPEUTIC BREATHWORK

  • Explore trauma, psychology and therapeutic breathwork through both scientific and experiential perspectives, including altered states, emotional processing, safety, context and the relationship between scientific understanding and spiritual experience.

  • Bring together assessment, communication and professional decision-making to understand client needs, establish appropriate starting points and guide people into suitable forms of support.

HOW BSC WORKS

  • Structured Practitioner Education
    Work through 13 progressive modules across approximately 7 months, integrating functional breathing, psychophysiology, sleep, exercise, therapeutic breathwork and practitioner reasoning.

  • Live Practitioner Integration
    Join regular live sessions focused on deeper teaching, Q&A, practical application, case discussion, assessment skills and translating the science into real-world practice.

  • Applied Practice & Competency
    Apply the learning through practical assessments, client work and case studies, demonstrating your ability to assess, individualise and make appropriate practitioner decisions.

  • Supervised Integration
    Continue for 5 months beyond the structured education phase, integrating the material through case work, practitioner development and supported application into your professional practice.

BSC is the School of Breath Science’s comprehensive practitioner certification for professionals who want deeper knowledge, assessment skills and individualised practitioner reasoning across multiple areas of breath science.

The programme integrates functional breathing, psychophysiology, sleep, exercise, behaviour, therapeutic breathwork and practitioner assessment into a broader framework for understanding and working with the person in front of you.

BRIT is not a prerequisite for BSC. Practitioners with relevant backgrounds in health, therapy, coaching, science, performance or breathwork may enter BSC directly when they are ready for this level of study.

For those looking for a shorter, more applied starting point, the Breath Resilience Instructor Training (BRIT) teaches a structured system for assessment, restoration, regulation and resilience, and provides a natural foundation for later BSC study.
